What is Happening In India With The Farmers ?

  1. In September 2020, the Indian government passed three agricultural laws that directly affected the farmers of India.
  2. These laws give big corporations the chance to step into the agricultural sector, and disrupt farmers' income in the process as they no longer guarantee the MSP system (minimum selling price). It is key to note that these laws were passed without consulting the farmers at all.
  3. It is also key to note that these bills were passed through a highly controversial 'voice vote', which are only appropriate for situations where there is near full agreement in the house (which in this case, there was not). This therefore ignored all calls of members who were opposed to these laws.

  5. Farmers' peaceful protests have been met with unjustifiable use of force from the Indian police, including the deployment of tear gas and water cannons. This unjust and brutal treatment has led to a death toll of 200+ martyrs and many farmers injured.
  6. Unreasonable arrests of farmers/protesters and reporters have also been made. This has led to 200+ missing farmers.
  7. Access to internet services, food and water supplies, and toilets have also been cut off at protest borders.
